Can you help me with my message to them?

On Wednesday, I have the honor of going back to my alma mater, The Citadel The Military College of South Carolina, to speak to an awesome group of future military officers and leaders of our country in all areas of industry!

They invited me to speak about how these future graduates can be successful despite the current “economic crunch” and what lessons I’ve learned since graduating from The Citadel!

What would you tell them?

I’d love to share your tips during my message!  Comment below and I’ll share your tips and wisdom keys with the group on Wednesday!

Knowing what you know now, what’s the one piece of advice you’d give these soon to be college graduates to help them have financial success in their future?

Pay off incurred college debts immediately. Accept a compromised living situation (eg living with a relative) for a little while to pull that off.

When it comes to money, strive to have more than "you think" you'll ever need. Find the median income and cost of living in your area and define that as your poverty level income when researching employment / business opportunities. Be generous and save for emergencies and tomorrows.

Carlos - Tell them that successful people create their own opportunities through education, networking, research and other life skills. The financial spin of course is that you must be positioned to take advantage of such opportunities as starting your own business, buying a hot stock, investing in real estate, etc. The net result is: start saving and planning now, even if you don't have the cash flow you would like.

Learn to save...even if it's just $20 a month. That way you may not feel so put out when that car just unexpectedly has to go to the doctor, or so that once Christmas comes, you know you have at least a little something put away.

Grab hold of a mentor that is in life where you want to be ....they have already walked through the mine field so to speak and can steer you toward the right path so you don't make the same mistakes...don't take financial advice from broke people (relatives, friends, etc) it would be like going to a plumber to get your hurting tooth fixed it just doesn't make sense....every truly successful person has a mentor/coach in life...that's just my 2 cents Carlos...good luck buddy!

and spend the money to develop a solid business and marketing plan to run a successful business. It is worth every penny to have professional consultants go over with it with you and once you have all that done, plan on needing at least 25% more money than your plan allows. If you dont have the fund available to fully implement your plan, WAIT!!

... See MoreOn a side note, I am teaching 8 hrs of continuing education at the grad school I graduated from only a few years ago in a couple weeks, its a weird feeling

Before financial success should come the pursuit of excellence in life. All else, then, follows.

As they graduate college, they merely have a "license to learn." That process goes forth throughout life to a greater or lesser degree depending on the person and his or her attitude toward it.

Excellence is not a destination, it is a journey, a process. Excellence is a personal attitude that dictates a direction in life. The process of excellence must begin with a core of fundamental beliefs governing one's actions that are NOT modified by situations or circumstances. The process of excellence is one requiring continued refinement and honing; continued attention to the details of the process.

An excellent example of this process is that of following the Ten Commandments. We never achieve perfection but we should strive throughout life to be more true and consistent in our keeping of them.

You'll do a great job, Carlos. May God bless you and those to whom you speak!

I like to ask these important questions.

Who do you want to be? (Be more concerned with character and less with image. Character will always outshine what you want others to perceive!)

What do you want to do? (In life, as a career?)

Where do you want to go?

When do you you want to arrive at your goals? (Set timelines so you can keep track of your progress.)

How are you going to get there? (You need a roadmap to success. Some people create their own paths to success, but they have a vision they see and a direction to go.)

And the most important question is...Why? Why is it important to you? (Family, friends, greater purpose?)

Dream big, and don't ever let anybody's words or expectations limit your thoughts and actions or determine your success.

    Best of luck Carlos!!

I've done a similar speech to the business communications classes at The Citadel a few times. I've told them to take the leadership lessons, core values and ethics you've learned from The Citadel and apply them in life. Find your passion, work hard and DO something! You'll do a great job!
